- Standard service usually involves attempting personal service first, which is when the process server personally hands the documents to the defendant. If personal service is not possible after several attempts, alternative methods like substituted service (leaving the documents with a suitable person at the defendant's residence or workplace) or service by mail might be used, depending on the jurisdiction's rules.
- Proof of Service: Upon successful service, the process server completes a proof of service form (also called an affidavit of service), which details the date, time, location, and method of service. This form is then filed with the court as evidence of proper notification.
